Dr. Luis Maria Argana International Airport in the town of Mariscal Estigarriba is strategically located between Brazil and Argentina. A large airport built in a small town in the 1980's by U.S. Technicians hired by the dictator of Paraguay at the time, Alfredo Stroessner. The airstrip is larger than the one in the capital, Asuncion. The population of the town is only about 2,000. When U.S. soldiers arrived in 2005, they landed at the Dr. Luis Maria Argana International Airport.
Apparently, the objective of the U.S. sending military advisors to train the military and police forces of Paraguay, was to help the government suppress a growing movement of landless farmers called the Paraguayan Campesino Movement.
