Capital: Jakarta
Recent History
Controlled by the Dutch as the Dutch East Indies until Indonesia was captured by the Japanese. After the Japanese surrender, Indonesia declared independence in September of 1945. The Dutch were still trying to recover from years of German occupation, so the British sent troops to occupy Indonesia until the Dutch could arrive. The Indonesians resisted them. Dutch troops began to arrive in October of 1945 and British troops began to withdraw. The Dutch and Indonesian people fought until 1949, when Indonesia achieved full independence. The Dutch lost 25,000 people and the Indonesians lost 80,000 people.
East Timor
FALINTIL guerrillas fought against Indonesian forces for the independence of East Timor. East Timor gained independence in 2002.
Aceh
Conflict in the Aceh province against Free Aceh Movement (GAM) separatist forces.
After the 2004 Tsunami the government of Indonesia and the GAM have peace accords.
